CO2 Sequestration

Itasca combines microseismic array design and monitoring expertise with advanced geomechanical modeling to reduce risk and enhance performance in CO2 storage reservoirs.

Microseismic monitoring prior to injection provides vital information about the integrity of the cap rock and reservoir bounds to ensure injected gas remains safely contained within the reservoir. Automatic, real-time microseismic processing using InSite can provide timely information on injection paths and potential damage to reservoir bounds and cap rock that may affect their confining properties.

Advanced microseismic post-processing offers a greater understanding of long-term reservoir behavior throughout the injection history. Detailed microseismic analysis allows for the assessment of potential leakage pathways following carbon capture and storage.

In depth understanding of fracture mechanisms can be developed through the integration of acquired microseismic data and synthetic rock mass (SRM) models built in Itasca’s geomechanical software. Scenarios can be modeled to test cap rock integrity and injection strategies to optimize operations and ensure containment of injected CO2 within the reservoir.
