Miguel Fuenzalida

Principal - Mining and Geomechanics

Miguel is a Principal Geomechanics and Mining Engineer with more than 14 years of experience in underground mining, specializing in the application of advanced numerical modeling to mine design, sequencing, stability assessment, ground support optimization, and mining-induced seismicity. He has deep technical expertise in sublevel, block, and panel caving, supporting worldwide projects from concept through feasibility. His client portfolio includes Codelco, Freeport-McMoRan, Newmont, New Gold, LKAB, BHP, Rio Tinto, Merdeka, De Beers, and Vale. Miguel’s core specialties include undercut and extraction level design, draw optimization, caveability assessments, fragmentation and recovery forecasting, infrastructure stability, and surface subsidence analysis. He has contributed to multiple mining and rock mechanics conferences and has been actively involved in major international research initiatives, including the Mass Mining Technology (MMT) and Caving2040 consortia, where he has supported the advancement of caving fundamentals, critical reviews of conventional design approaches, and the development of best-practice caving methodologies.
