At shallow depth, the initial stress state can significantly affect the behavior of the rock mass around excavations, but stress measurements are usually subjected to high levels of uncertainty. This was the case at the Odenplan railway station in Stockholm where unexpectedly large deformations were measured during the excavation.
The Fifth International Itasca Symposium will be held at the University of Vienna (Austria). The Symposium will features the application of Itasca software for solving engineering and scientific challenges in geomechanics, hydrogeology, microseismicity, and more.
Dr. Tran is a geotechnical engineer with experience in tunnelling and underground space, numerical modelling for geotechnical investigation. His specialisation mainly concerns the behaviour of deep tunnels through the Alps (e.g., the Saint-Martin-la-Port access adit for the Lyon-Turin project and the safety gallery of the Fréjus tunnel).
